Security Council for latest resolutionTehran, Sep 28 IANS
Iran strongly criticized Sunday the UN
Security Council for adopting the latest resolution on the
country and warned it against
helping the US implementing its foreign
policy, the official IRNA
news agency reported."The
Security Council is expected to retain its prestige rather than being a means for the US foreign
policy," Ali Larijani, speaker of Iranian parliament Majlis, said Sunday. On Saturday, the 15-nation council unanimously approved the new resolution, calling on
Iran to "comply fully" with the past UN demands to halt its uranium-enrichment programmes. "This kind of approach turns the negotiations into a cheap
game and there may be the need for other decisions in this political diversion," the speaker added.Larijani said the
Security Council has damaged its prestige by highlighting
technical dispute between
Iran and the
International Atomic
Energy Agency IAEA as a
security issue and passing hasty resolutions against
Iran. He criticized the so-called
Iran-Six five permanent members of the General Council plus
Germany group's double
standard policy towards
Iran following
adoption of the Resolution 1835 against the
country. "Such behaviour
will degrade the role of talks to the level of a frivolous act. Perhaps
Iran needs to make a new decision about continuing such political
hobby," Larijani said in his
address to a formal session of Majlis.Saeid Jalili, chief
nuclear negotiator of
Iran, also called Saturday the new resolution "not constructive" and merely aimed at "showing solidarity" among the world powers. The US and its West allies accuse
Iran of developing
nuclear weapon under the cover of its controversial
nuclear programme, a charge
Iran has denied.
Iran insists that its
nuclear programme is of peaceful purpose and designed to generate
electricity.--Indo-Asian
