Left countdown has begun in Bengal

The results of the latest municipal election in extensive areas of Bengal proved that the Left sway on the state is gradually declining. The way in which four of the 13 Bengal towns where civic polls were held slipped out of the Left Front’s dominance proved that history is repeating itself after a gap of three decades. If we remember, in the same way the, once omnipotent, Congress party in the state got fragmentized. But of all these the condition of the Marxist boss, CPM, is most pathetic since the three of the four municipalities where Left lost were under CPM.

What is most striking is that even the Left bastion of Burdwan is not far from decline and the opposition made its headway even in this region. The defeat at Guskara in Burdwan district has certainly stunned the Left Front and its votaries. Burdwan is a Marxist bastion and home to the government’s second-in-command and industrialization spearhead, Nirupam Sen, along with of the party veteran Benoy Konar.

To the political pundits the circle is almost complete and the decline of CPM after the disastrous Panchayat election proves that there is hardly any attraction of Left among the populace.

What has been the real reason is difficult to ascertain. Well, the blame game has already started and a number of possible reasons for this disaster are cropping out. They include lots of ranging from unity among the opposition, land acquisition to mounting corruption among a broad section of party cadres.

But even in this onslaught the Left recalcitrant, Forward Bloc and RSP, have succeeded to maintain their positions. If this trend continues how long will the Left Front exist? This is indeed the question of the day!
